5 Things to Look For on Sunday

You may be just as excited as I am for today’s game against the Indianapolis Colts kicking off the 2011 NFL season for the Houston Texans. Media and fans are looking for a big day against a Manning-less Colts team, but I do want fans to proceed with caution since this is the NFL. With Sunday marking what could be one of the most historic season in Texans history, I give you five things to look for in Sunday’s contest with the Colts.

1. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis- The Texans killers themselves have created headaches for the offense and fans of Houston as far back as 2002. The ability for the Colts defensive ends to create issues for the offense should be a scary thought itself. Once again they will be matched up against Eric Winston and Duane Brown, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2010 season. The biggest issues Mathis and Freeney cause is their ability to dominate in one on one situations against the run and especially the pass. The two Colts have made big plays in this rivalry and will look to continue their success today at Reliant.

2. Don’t be Fooled There is nothing worse than thinking this game is in the bag. The Colts are coming to town considerable underdogs to the Texans and they will be in “Survival” mode and out to prove Peyton Manning is not what makes the Colts team. Everyone knows the most dangerous animal is the hurt one, and the Colts are hurt right now which should provide some worry for the Texans. With a new defense and extra confidence heading into the opener, the Texans better not sit back of one play, it could prove costly.

3. New Look D- If you are not excited to see the new look Wade Phillips run defense, then you might not have a pulse. With all of the success in the preseason it will be interesting to see if the Texans can continue into the regular season. With new Texans in Johnathan Joseph and Danieal Manning in the secondary there should be a mass improvement in the back half of the defense. The Texans have only shown about “half” of their defense in the preseason, and we all should be excited to see what happens in the season opener.

4. Matt Schaub- There should be reason to believe the Texans offense could be more potent than previous years. The offense will only be as good as Schuab and without him they look like they might take a big drop off if Matt Leinart takes the snaps. He has taken a step as a leader by leading workouts during the lockout and his biggest season as a professional starts today.

5. NEVER FORGET- Now today marks the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks that rocked our very nation. I still remember being at college and my assistant baseball coach told me there is something wrong in New York and it was like watching a nightmare unfolding in front of my eyes. It was one of those moments that changed my life forever and when this day comes around every year it makes me hug my family a little more.

Today you will see players from both teams sporting gloves and cleats with the RED, WHITE and BLUE in tribute to the victims of these tragedies. The NFL decided to allow players to wear these items without fines for this week one of games. The NFL originally was going to fine players for wearing these cleats and gloves, but quickly changed their minds.

A big thanks goes out to our military in the states and overseas we would not be what we are without you and to all the families of the victims of the 9-11 attacks know we will never forget, because without living in the greatest country in the world their would be no opportunity for a great day like this.
