6 Things to Watch for Against the Saints

Today the Houston Texans travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints, and this will definitely tell if the Texans have turned the corner as a franchise after two early wins in the 2011 season. Already facing the Saints in preseason, the Texans will look to build off that game into one that counts. We don’t know if the preseason game will carry over, but it was an encouraging sign on what might become of today’s game.

Here are six things to watch in today’s game against the Saints.

1. Jimmy Graham- The second year tight end out of University of Miami is now proving to be a viable option for Drew Brees and their spread attack. Being targeted 14 times he has 10 receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown and averaging 13.5 yards a reception. He is athletic enough to stretch the field to create mismatches against the slower linebackers and smaller defensive backs, look for Graham to be causing issues for the Texans in the middle of the field.

2. The Texans have to erase what has happened the previous two weeks and concentrate what is going on today. The Texans are looking and acting like a new team this season, but it is yet to be seen on how they are going to perform today. With the new mentality on defense and a new confidence being seen on the field, we will find out quick in the game if the Texans have come to play.

3. Ben Tate and the offensive line will have the task of helping out the defense control Drew Brees and the Saints offense. If the Texans can run the ball efficiently they can shorten the game and put pressure on Brees to try to score quickly, which might prove important for the Texans defense. Less time to operate means more chances for errors, and the Texans have to capitalize on the Saints mistakes if they make any.

Ben Tate has the chance to tie a NFL record to become, only 2nd running back in history to start his career with 3 consecutive games with 100+ yards to start a NFL career. This is a great opportunity for Tate to get into the record books, and his ability to rush for 100 yards could prove a big key for a Texans victory today.

4. The fact that Johnathan Vilma might not play today could prove huge for the Texans offense and their ability to run the ball. Vilma is a perennial All-Pro middle linebacker and the heart and soul of the Saints defense. He could be a big piece missing from their defense can prove to be an advantage for the Texans.

5. This is the time for the Texans stars to shine, in big games the cream rises to the top. Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, Mario Williams, Johnathan Joseph, DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing all need to prove they can play in big games. If they are able to put it together today  expect the rest of the team to follow suit. This is something that we have not seen in the past with the Texans, and today would be a good time to start.

6. If there is time for anyone to shine, it is Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips’ time to prove they are more than capable of leading the Texans to the playoffs. Everybody doubts their abilities to lead their teams as head coaches, but you never hear anyone bash their abilities to X’s and O’s their opponents. Head Coaches need to motivate and Kubiak, as far as we can tell, looks like a silent motivator, but he better get the Texans ready to go it this important early season game. Phillips can help take some pressure off of Kubiak with his knowledge and new confidence he has brought to Houston, it is hard to really think the Texans will not have a good showing today in New Orleans.
