You Really Don’t Like Matt Schaub?

Everyday is different, and you are not going to have your best day all the time, but to say Matt Schaub is the reason for the Houston Texans woes is flat absurd. Before you click off this post, realize one thing he has given Texans more to cheer about than the previous player that wore the #8 jersey.

Schaub this year has thrown for 1,377 yards with 9 touchdowns to 5 interceptions and has a completion percentage of 59.8. His completion percentage is a little low, but when you throw 51 times in a game in a Gary Kubiak run offense, something is not right.

Understand Schaub has not had his two biggest playmakers on the field together for more than two quarters in Andre Johnson and Arian Foster. You are only as good as the people around you and in Schaub’s case he has been struggling because his two biggest weapons are hardly healthy. He is left depending on Kevin Walter, Owen Daniels and a handful of unproven players.

We understand Schaub is on the outskirts on being one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league, but to say he will never get the Texans to the next level is unfair. Schaub is a classic drop back passer with above average arm strength, and is not goint to “wow” anyone with laser beam passes. He makes his money in the Texans scheme and has shown at times he can be the man, but when he is asked to throw it exclusively he struggles. He is in his comfort zone when the Texans offense is running the ball and that has led to two consecutive seasons (’09,’00) with over 4,300 yards passing in those seasons, and 54 touchdown passes. Those are some pretty solid stats, but his win loss record is not, since joining the Texans he has a record of 28-31, but once again it was not all on him, the team around him was not very good.

The Texans need Schaub to take that next step as a quarterback to help push the Texans over the top, but giving him unfair blame is getting old. He has made some rash decisions with the football, but what quarterback hasn’t. Look at what some other teams have at quarterback like the Seahawks, Dolphins or the Jaguars to name a few, we could be in a worse boat, so be thankful for that.

It is evident that Schaub has not been comfortable this season throwing the ball, but I think it has to do with protection, the lack of Andre Johnson in the offense and the overall lack of big yardage from the running game. He will get it fixed, we just have to give him time to get his weapons back, then judgment can be truly made. You go to work without your tools and see how successful you may be, now you get a feeling of what he is going through.

Time is precious, but the Texans will be fine and Matt Schaub will prove why he is the captain of this team, because if the players believe in him so should the fans.
