Updated: Wade Phillips Taking a Leave of Absence

Wednesday morning defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has announced to the team that he will be taking a medical leave of absence to have a surgical procedure done. Phillips expect to return by season’s end, hopefully.

In Phillips updated press conference after practice this afternoon, he acknowledged that the procedure that was being performed was on his kidney. He did not go into much detail on the specifics on the procedure. He did say when asked what the worst case scenario would be, he said laughing, “I would die.” Phillips seemed up beat in the interview, but did say he had to take care of it now.

Linebacker coach Reggie Herring will take over the defensive call duties for the Texans in Phillips absence. The Texans feel Herring is more than capable to take over the Texans #1 ranked defense.

Phillips has done wonders for the Texans defense which rank high in numerous categories, and he help bring a real defensive mentality to the Texans. Phillips who has been the biggest offseason acquisition has helped turn a team that couldn’t get over the hump, into a playoff team.
