Stanford Routt Scheduled to Visit

According to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora recently released Stanford Routt is scheduled to visit Houston later this week to discuss his future. According to La Canfora:

Former Raiders CB Stanford Routt visiting BUF today, KC tomorrow and HOU, DAL and TEN later this week.

Routt was recently released from the Oakland Raiders after he re-signed with the Raiders for three years for $31.5 million dollars in 2010. Routt teamed up with Nnamdi Asomugha in 2010 to form one of the best cornerback duo’s in the NFL. Routt was drafted by the Raiders in 2005 in the 2nd round (38th overall) out of the University of Houston. The Austin native went to Connally High School where he was a football and track star, and eventually went to Houston to be a two sport college athlete. At Houston, he was an All-American track athlete and went on to turn some head at the NFL combine where he ran a 4.27 second, 40-yard dash in 2005.

In 78 career games with the Raiders, Routt started 53 games and has 237 tackles with 10 interceptions and 50 pass deflections. Routt was in line to take over for the departed Asomugha as the Raiders premier cornerback, but with all of the organizational change, Routt was a cap casualty and was let go to much of the NFL’s surprise.

At 28 years old, the 6’1″ 195 lbs. speedy cornerback will be a hot commodity this offseason, and the Texans are lined up behind plenty of teams. It could be safe to say that Houston and Dallas could be front-runners to sign Routt because of this being Routt’s home state, but it is interesting to see the Texans talking to cornerbacks this offseason. It shows the Texans are still in the business of filling their roster with the best players available, and it seems that Routt would be an upgrade to depth for the Texans.
