Texans Add Bradie James and Resign Dobbins

On Thursday, Mark Berman, Fox Sports, reported that the Houston Texans will bring in free agent linebacker Bradie James from the Dallas Cowboys. The 31-year-old free agent has been a staple for the Cowboys defense since 2005, and has been a tackling machine for the Cowboys from the inside linebacker position. James had started 102 straight games for the Cowboys (2005-2011), and started 111 of the 142 games he appeared in for the Cowboys (2003-2011).He also averaged 107 total tackles between 2005-2010, and 2011 seemed to be his down year. The emergence of Sean Lee pushed James to the back burner and did not fit in the Cowboys future plans and left unsigned.

James was drafted by the Cowboys in the 2003 NFL draft in the 4th round (103rd overall) out of LSU. The Louisiana native will stay in the state he has called home since his rookie year and be reunited with his former coaches from Dallas, Wade Phillips and Reggie Herring. James produced at a high level for both Phillips and Herring in Dallas, but that is yet to be answered here in Houston. It has been noted that James will compete with Darryl Sharpton for the starting linebacker position next to Brian Cushing. At 6’2″ and 241 lbs. James is a big physical veteran that will bring some leadership and knowledge of the 3-4 scheme that Phillips has run.

It is not an impact pick up, but a nice pick up to produce a solid two-down linebacker for the Texans in 2012.

Also the Texans resigned a key piece of their 2011 team in inside linebacker Tim Dobbins, who was a special teams warrior and short yardage linebacker. Dobbins addition in 2011 made the Texans better as a team and was voted a team captain by his teammates after game 8 of the season.

Bringing back Dobbins is another low-cost signing that provides depth to the linebacker position and leadership to the field and locker room.
