Texans Profile: Randy Bullock

With the 161st overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select… Randy Bullock, K, Texas A&M University

Vital Stats

Height:          5’9”

Weight:          205 lbs.

Arms:             29 ¼”

Hands:           8 3/8”

With the recent departure of Neil Rackers to the Redskins, the Texans had a vital need at the kicker position and they filled it with the best available kicker, Randy Bullock, TAMU.  Bullock is so darn accurate, it’s almost scary with an  88% (29 of 33) accuracy rate on field goals. Bullock’s longest FG during his Aggie career was 52 yards and he is 13 of 16 from beyond 40 yards (81%.) He scored the Aggies 142 points in 2011.

Since claiming the starting K position halfway through his freshman year, Bullock made every one of his 101 extra point attempts over the past two years and his kickoff are boomers. He’s been clutch in pressure situations.  But Bullock’s no Rackers, seeming not as willing to make tackles and get aggressive on special teams and he could stand to improve upon the rise of his kicks.  However, his job is to make kicks and he will be a week 1 starter.

This is the very first time the Texans have ever drafted a kicker and many feel Bullock may have been taken too soon. Compare that to where other notable kickers in history have been taken: Rackers with pick 169, Alex Henery with pick 120, Martin Gramatica with pick 80 and Janikowski with pick 17 (overall!) These numbers should make the Texans pick much more feasible for fans.

Bullock may also be the feel-good story of the draft. He absolutely prepared himself for the possibility he’d go undrafted but felt strongly that a team would pick him up and he would prove himself.  Read what the 2011 Lou Groza award winner has to say in the interview below:

Your research is impressive. In fact, it blows my mind just a little bit. Glad the Texans are giving this guy a chance. He seems like good stuff. Gig ’em!
