Texans OTAs, The Red Herring Edition

Here are some quick tidbits from Houston Texans OTAs.

– It looks like UDFA, Hebron Fangupo will not be lost for the season, and looks to be sidelined until late next week. He was rolled up on during practice and ended up with a sprained MCL.

– Line Backers coach Reggie Herring had some choice words about  the loss of DeMeco Ryans and the addition of Bradie James.

“I don’t mind throwing it on the table, we’re pretty pleased with picking Bradie (James) up, because we feel like we gained back what we lost with DeMeco leaving, and then some, to be honest with you,”

After the comment he was pulled away from the interview because he was late for a coaches meeting that started at noon. Either way it was some interesting words from Herring, and it is evident from the interview that he is a big fan of James coming to Houston. See the interview here.

– It seems that the reason that Texans punter Brett Hartmann was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy was because of Ritalin, for his ADD. It is on the league’s banned substance list, but can be cleared with NFL’s approval for that reason. Hartmann challenged the ruling and had his suspension reduced from 4 games to 3. Hartmann failed to get it cleared with the NFL before he failed the league’s test.

– Head Coach Gary Kubiak is interested in rotating wide receivers to see which ones come out on top, Lestar Jean  and Kevin Walter have been getting the 1st team reps with Andre Johnson resting his injured knee. Also, he thinks that training camp will sort out the right side of the offensive line with Antoine Caldwell and rookie Brandon Brooks battling it out for the starting right guard position, and for the right tackle position between Derek Newton and Rashad Butler.

– It was pointed out by Lance Zierlein, that UDFA Dwight Jones has received no reps at wide receiver during the first two days of OTAs. With all of the players at the receiver position for the Texans, the time is limited for Jones and the other UDFA wide receivers.

– Backup quarterback T.J. Yates feels fortunate to have OTAs this season to work on his game, since his reps were limited last year with the strike shortened offseason. He also thinks that he is seeing the field better and his confidence will only get better as time goes on. Also, Yates pointed out that rookies Keshawn Martin and DeVier Posey have impressed him with their ability to pick up the offense and overall skill on the field.

-Linebacker Brian Cushing, made it known that he doesn’t have to change with Ryans not in the locker room, and needs to become a better leader and most of all just keep leading by example.

– It also seems that Trindon Holliday according to Kubiak has made some strides as a receiver, and is looking at Holliday and Martin to compete for the punt return duties heading into the 2012 season.
