Training Camp: Rejuvenated

With Day Eight in the books, the Houston Texans had an upbeat practice which turned into only a morning session. For two hours, the team was running well and both the offense and defense had some good moments out at the Reliant practice fields.

– According to Head Coach Gary Kubiak, three starters are set to return to practice on Monday. Kareem Jackson, Duane Brown and Andre Johnson have all made it clear they are ready to go but the Texans, being gun-shy from last season’s injury bug, are taking every precaution with their players.

– Defensive lineman Sonny Harris left practice early with a right leg injury, and was taken in early. Also, wide receiver Jerrell Jackson has a leg issue that will hold him out 8-10 days.  Both Jackson and Harris have had some nice days at the first week of camp.

– The Texans also signed Jimmy Saddler-McQueen to add depth to their defensive line group. With multiple injuries, the Texans needed depth and with the addition of Saddler-McQueen it puts the roster at 89 total players in camp.

– The star of the past two days was wide receiver Lestar Jean who has looked like he is a new player on the field. He had catches all day, and his catch of the day came from Matt Schaub on a deep ball down the left sideline where he had a nice one-handed catch on cornerback Brice McCain. Jean looks much more in tune with what is going on on the field, and has opened some eyes the past few days.

Mario Louis and Keshawn Martin

– Speaking of Matt Schaub, today was the best he has looked since the beginning of camp. Don’t look now but his favorite target with Johnson out was wide receiver Keshawn Martin. Martin looks smooth in and out of his routes and he too had a huge catch from Schaub on a deep ball in the middle of the field, also on McCain. We talked about Martin yesterday but he is quiet on the field and is all ears when the veterans talk to him.

– Tight end Garrett Graham has picked up his play and looked good blocking and receiving the football. According to Kubiak, Graham is finally healthy and is showing why the Texans drafted him in 2010.

– Offensive Tackles Rashad Butler, Derek Newton and Andrew Gardner were all rotating at the tackle position today. All three look capable, but with Brown set to return you can expect the attention to move back to the right tackle position.

– Rookie outside linebacker Delano Johnson had an impressive day today. Johnson dropped in coverage and deflected three passes, and he had some hang time. He is an interesting player because he is playing for the practice squad at this moment, but seeing him in the game is what we are looking forward to.

– Brooks Reed was moving at another speed today, just ask Ben Tate who was cleaned up by Reed on a run play. Reed has shown he has spent some time in the weight room where he has been pushing around the offense, especially on his pass rush.

– One player under the radar is defensive tackle David Hunter, the Houston native has been working with the 2s with both Jared Crick and J.J. Watt out with injury. Hunter has been working hard and providing some stout run stoppage from his defensive end position. At 6-2 and 303 lbs., Hunter has been a surprise stand out in the first week of camp.

– Plenty of people are asking how Arian Foster has been looking with the football. He has had some good runs, but most impressive has been how comfortable he looks in the offense heading into his 4th season with the Texans. He is the first through every drill for the running backs, and despite not being vocal he is leading by example.

– The Texans had the afternoon off and Sunday too. They will be back full speed on Monday preparing for their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on 8.11.2012 at 6 p.m. central in Carolina.
