Shaun Cody Out with Back Issue

Is Cody coming back?

Today Head Coach Gary Kubiak said that starting nose tackle Shaun Cody has a back injury, a result of a disc issue from Saturday’s game against Carolina. Cody received an epidural for pain and will be reevaluated in the coming days to determine how long he will be out. Cody has been fighting back issues during camp and has been given practice time off to get him ready for the season.

Cody has provided some stout run defense from the nose position where he helped the defense get to the number two overall unit in the NFL. With 23 tackles and 1 sack as the starter, he did a good job of eating up blockers so that the inside linebacker could make plays. Losing Cody is a big blow to the defense, where he is the best nose option for the Texans right now.

With Cody on the shelf, look for Sonny Harris, Mitch King and Hebron Fangupo to compete for some snaps at the nose tackle position. Earl Mitchell will take over as the starter as nose tackle for the Texans.

*Updated*

News was good on Monday concerning Cody’s back, as early results shows it is a back strain. He will be out for 4-5 days and has already been ruled out for Saturday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. It sounds like rest and rehab will help get Cody back on track and ready for Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins.
