All-22 Breakdown: Week 9

In this breakdown, we look at Garret Graham’s touchdown catch and the Houston Texans switching it up on third and long. See what you think.

Duane Brown Doing Work

3rd and 10 on the Houston 4 yard line. The Texans usually can count on a screen pass or power play with Wade Smith pulling into the hole. Well, the Texans finally dig into the playbook and switch it up on the Buffalo Bills on 3rd and long.

The Texans are going after Spencer Johnson #91 (Yellow) with one of the oldest football plays, the trap. Duane Brown (Red) will be the offensive lineman executing the trap play. It’s simple, the Texans will leave Johnson unblocked and let him create the crease for Foster.

At the snap, you can see the offensive line blocking everyone except Johnson. He is playing poor technique and runs up field and leaves a free shot for the pulling Brown.

Brown kicks Johnson out, and Foster gets to the second level untouched. Derek Newton and Chris Myers have the linebacker sealed off, and Foster is off to the races.

Foster ends up picking up 11 yards and, more importantly, a new set of downs. Even though the drive did not result in a score, the Texans had the ball for 4 more minutes and got out of their territory to flip the field.

Garrett Graham Improvises

The Texans are driving and go empty set with Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter split wide. James Casey, Owen Daniels and Garrett Graham are also in the play.

Daniels motions across the formation and will be Schaub’s primary target. The offense is bunching tight to the formation to try and confuse the Bills.

This is the endzone view.  You can see the middle of the field appears open for Daniels to work.

Casey and Graham run clearing routes so Daniels can run the underneath route and attack the open void. It initially looks open and Schaub sees it.

The route is closed on quickly and the primary read is not there. You can see Graham (Yellow) in the back of the end zone covered by two Bills.

Another view from the end zone. Daniels and Graham are covered. Schaub extends the play and drifts to the right looking in Andre Johnson’s direction. Graham is being trailed by Nick Barnett, and Safety Jarius Bryd loses sight of Graham while looking at Schaub.

Graham senses Schaub is in trouble and works back towards him. Look at the opening in the end zone.

Schaub sees Graham and waits for him to clear. Once Graham clears, the two Bills’ defenders are in trail mode and are in trouble.

Schaub sees the separation and throws into the open space in the end zone, and Graham does the rest on his own.

With good protection from the offensive line, Graham slides and makes his first NFL touchdown catch of his career. More impressive was Graham’s awareness to make a play on the run.
