Quick Look: Texans 2013 Free Agents

It’s that time of year to close the books on the 2012 season and start looking at the 2013 Houston Texans and the first order of business is their own free agents. With 21 potential free agents on the horizon, there are no real Big Money players but there are one or two current players, in our estimation, that are a necessity to keep in Houston.

We take a quick look at the free agents on the current roster and give our quick looks at each one.

Free agency begins on March 12, the first day of the new League Year.

Yes, Please

Glover Quin- Priority number one for the Texans and a sure tackler and coverage guy in the secondary for the defense. He has turned into a leader on the field and has serious respect from his teammates.

Brice McCain- A good nickel corner for the Texans, his speed in the slot is unmatched by any current player. It was apparent how important he was for the defense when the middle of the field became exposed with him on the shelf with a broke foot.

Kick the Tires

Tim Dobbins- Special teams captain can be brought back for depth at the inside linebacker position.

Alan Ball- Can spot fill at cornerback and safety, but real value came on special teams where he was a difference maker on the team.

James Casey- Can be brought back on the cheap, but needs to be relegated to special teams and a H-Back role. Time for the Texans to find a real fullback.

Connor Barwin- He will get bigger offers elsewhere but expect the Texans to offer him a fair deal. He played himself out of big money, but the organization likes him.

Shayne Graham- Better bring back competition.  Graham, who was decent the entire season, can help Randy Bullock get through training camp.

Donnie Jones- Pretty solid the majority of the season, until late in the season where he lost his touch. No punter on the roster, probably safe to say he will be brought back to compete for a job.

End of the Road

Quintin Demps- Had serious coverage issues late in the season which had him benched for the most important stretch of the season.

Justin Forsett- Good role player but liability in special teams and pass protection.

Mister Alexander- Brought back after being cut, special teams player and young. Might have a chance for a camp invite once again.

Rashad Butler- In two seasons, he made $3,567,280 and played 4 games. Done.

Antoine Caldwell- Over taken by two rookies after being the starter at right guard, and multiple injuries has ended his time here in Houston.

Shaun Cody- Fan favorite but back issues and emergence of Earl Mitchell cancels “On the Nose”.

Keyaron Fox- Tore his ACL in training camp, last the team has heard of him.

Andrew Gardner- Two seasons with the team, 4 games played with very limited snaps.

Ryan Harris-  Injury replacement for Rashad Butler, filler to push second year right tackle Derek Newton, snaps decreased as season went on.

Bradie James- Brought in after they found out Darryl Sharpton was behind his rehab schedule in the off-season. Admirable job but nothing left in the tank.

Jesse Nading- Hard worker but team used him as a special teams player and back up linebacker on the inside and outside. Nothing to keep around past this season.

Stanford Routt- Roster filler, not much else.

Barrett Ruud- Picked up on the free agent scraps and couldn’t help fill the void of the losses of Brian Cushing, Darryl Sharpton and Tim Dobbins.
