Possible Heart Procedure for Arian Foster

According to Alex Flanagan of NFL Network and NBC, Arian Foster is considering minor surgery to correct a heart condition which sidelined him in week 16 of the 2012 season. The Pro Bowl running back for the Texans is expected to make a decision on whether to have a heart ablation to remedy an irregular heartbeat.

Foster told Flanagan that the biggest concern with the irregular heartbeat is shortness of breath. Since the age of 12, Foster has had about 8 incidents with the condition but week 16 versus the Vikings was the first time he had been affected during a game. Foster believes his heartbeat becomes irregular in correlation to stress. After talking with doctors and trainers, he learned that Hakeem Olajuwon was afflicted with the same condition; his doctors determined Olajuwon’s trigger to be drinking cold water.

If Foster elects to undergo the surgical treatment, it will occur during the offseason and should not affect his 2013 availability.
