Day 1 Wrap-Up: Texans Free Agency

It was one of those days where the Houston Texans were going to be in wait and see mode and prior to the new league year opening up. There was no good news, the Texans were watching their own free agents board planes and visit other NFL teams. There are some Texans who are no longer with the team and there was some interesting news on who the Texans contacted on the free agent market.

Day One News

Kevin Walter was released from the Texans and it saved $2.5 million against the cap. Walter was due $4.5 million and was a necessary move for the upcoming offseason to make moves. This all but puts the Texans in a market for wide receivers in the draft or off the free agent market.

Glover Quin left Houston on a trip bound for Detroit where he will be visiting with the Lions.

James Casey was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles and was supposedly contacted by 14 NFL teams including the Texans. The Eagles were his first and only trip which ended up with him signing a contract by the end of the day. Casey leaves a void in their starting offense, but looks like he will be utilized better in the new Chip Kelly run offense in Philadelphia.

Brice McCain‘s agent David Canter stated on the radio that he is looking for a $3 to $5 million a season for his client.

– Also Canter’s other client, Tim Dobbins, will be looking for a multi-year deal to sign. Dobbins has been with Houston the past two seasons, both were one year deals.

– News on Connor Barwin is on silent and late reports had the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots looking to sign the free agent linebacker.

– Sources have confirmed the Texans have inquired about free agent wide receiver, Greg Jennings. No contract was offered to Jennings, but contact was made.

– Also, the Texans have put their feelers out on free agent defensive back Charles Woodson. Woodson is scheduled to be in San Francisco on Wednesday talking with the 49ers.
