Bold Predictions for Texans Training Camp

It is that time of year, the Houston Texans are close to opening their 2013 season officially with the start of training camp. The Texans have gone through a rookie mini camp, OTAs, mandatory mini camp and an off period with a quick snapshot of what they might look like for the 2013 season.

All the speculation will be over and the Texans will be in pads and playing preseason games before we know it, opening up August 9th in Minnesota versus the Vikings.

Bold Predictions for Camp

1. Wide receiver DeVier Posey will not start the season on the PUP list. Posey is ahead of his recovery from the Achilles injury that he suffered late in the divisional playoff game against the New England Patriots. If Posey can defy the odds, he will force the Texans’ hand to reassess the wide receiver group to open the season.

Is Cody coming back?

2. The Texans will bring back Shaun Cody at some point to back up starter Earl Mitchell, but most importantly compete for the back up position. There is some reason to think that the Texans are not settled with their personnel at nose tackle and they need someone they trust. Even if it is for a season, don’t be surprised.

3. Keshawn Martin will take a giant step forward as a wide receiver for the Texans. Martin will benefit the most with the arrival of DeAndre Hopkins coming to Houston and allow him to work as a true slot receiver. He will be a key piece of the offense for the 2013 season and it will start during training camp.

4. The Texans will bring in a street free agent to help them at inside linebacker before the end of camp. The Texans have three veterans in Brian Cushing, Tim Dobbins and Darryl Sharpton who all can help the Texans, but having a back up plan not named Brooks Reed is the most important thing to remedy. With Reed needing to be the man at outside linebacker, his value is at an all time high with the youth at that position.

There are free agents at the inside linebacker position that could possibly bring something to the team in terms of depth.

Sam Montgomery

Sam Montgomery

5. Sam Montgomery will put all doubts about him aside the first time he lines up against the Minnesota Vikings in August. There is plenty of negative press surrounding the 3rd round rookie out of LSU but Montgomery will get it under control during training camp. When the lights come on and the pressure rises, that is when Montgomery is at his best and the bump in the road to start camp will be just that.
