Adam Caplan was the first to report that the Houston Texans are scheduled to meet with free agent inside linebacker Joe Mays. The 5-11 and 250 lbs. inside linebacker is a true thumper on the inside of the defense and really made his mark with the Denver Broncos. He started 21 games for the Broncos before being released before the 2013 training camp opened. His 2012 season ended early after he broke his leg and ankle against the New Orleans Saints.
Mays is a household name for Texans fans, after he almost decapitated Matt Schaub last season in Denver. Schaub lost part of his ear in the process and Mays was fined for the hit.
The Texans are looking for help at a thin inside linebacker position with Brian Cushing, Tim Dobbins and Darryl Sharpton all coming off season ending injuries. Sharpton has a new set back with a groin issue that has kept him out for the first three days of training camp.
Mays was drafted out of North Dakota State in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Mays spent two seasons with the Eagles, and the last three with the Broncos. He has appeared in 47 career NFL games and started 22 of them with 153 total tackles.
