Texans trade Jeff Maehl for Nate Menkin

The Houston Texans have traded wider receiver Jeff Maehl to the Philadelphia Eagles for offensive lineman Nate Menkin. Maehl was entering his third season with the Texans where he appeared in three games for Houston his rookie season. Since those appearances, Maehl has been on the practice squad waiting his chance.

Maehl had an outside shot to make this team but he did not help his cause after dropping two passes in a row that were touchdowns Friday night against the Minnesota Vikings. In a numbers game at wide receiver, Maehl had a slim chance to make this team and being able to trade him for second year offensive lineman Nate Menkin is a good deal for General Manager Rick Smith.

Menkin was originally signed by the Texans as a free agent rookie from Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2012. He had a good enough preseason to make it through the final cuts of the preseason but was waived at the end to get him to the practice squad. He was claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles where he spent the season on the roster. His season ended on the injured reserve with a throat cartilage tear in December.

It will be interesting to see the reasoning for the addition for Menkin to the Texans. It could be due to the uncertainty of Wade Smith’s current knee issue or just inconsistent early play from Ben Jones and Cody White. Time will tell, but bringing back Menkin will help with the current issues on the offensive line.

It works out as a good deal for both the Texans and Eagles where both teams needed help at each position.
