Report: Texans Have Contacted Lovie Smith

According to NFL Network Ian Rapoport, the Houston Texans have contacted former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith. The Texans are spending little time on waiting to contact coaching candidates for the vacancy left by Gary Kubiak who was fired on Friday after the Texans 11th straight loss.

Smith was born in Gladewater, Texas and grew up in Big Sandy before heading to the University of Tulsa to play football. Smith has been coaching in the NFL since 1996 when he was the linebackers coach in Tampa Bay (1996-2000) and in 2001 he became the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams (2001-2003).

In 2004, Smith was named the Head Coach of the Chicago Bears where he implemented his Cover 2 defense and put together a solid run with the Bears. Smith spent 9 seasons with the Bears where he posted a 81-63 overall record and a post season record of 3-3 and a Super Bowl appearance in 2006. Smith won three NFC North division titles (2005, 2006, 2010) and one NFC Championship.

Smith will be the start of names the Texans will show interest in as this process continues.
