The Houston Texans have promoted tight end Brad Smelley to the active roster and released Jake Byrne in the process. Smelley was signed to the Texans practice squad after being released by the St.Louis Rams a week after the signed him.

Smelley has one career reception for the Cleveland Browns, and now with the Texans short players at tight end with the injuries to Owen Daniels and Garrett Graham, Smelley gets the call. The Texans look to be interested in more of offensive threats in the passing game now with Smelly joining rookie Ryan Griffin this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

With the promotion Jake Byrne was placed on waivers after being signed off the San Diego Chargers practice squad. Byrne, this season, filled in more at fullback than tight end since being added to the 53-man roster.
