Texans Interview of Whisenhunt to Be Put on Hold

The Houston Texans according to reports had an interview lined up with San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and that will have to be put on hold according to league rules. With the Chargers winning against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday 27-24, the Texans will have to make a decision on their head coaching future possibly not interviewing Whisenhunt.

As there is an urgency to hire new head coaches for some non-playoff teams, the NFL does allow teams to request permission to interview a postseason participant’s assistants during the wild card week for teams who have the bye that week. They can also request permission to do so during the first week of Super Bowl preparations as long as there is a two-week break between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. The team only has one chance to talk to the assistant coach, once permission is granted, before the coach’s team is eliminated from the playoffs.

With the Chargers in the wildcard round set to meet the Cincinnati Bengals, and due to the language of the rule the Texans could be waiting until next week at the earliest to conduct their interview. Owner Bob McNair has made it known that the Texans are trying to end their coaching search by the middle of this coming week.

This could leave the Texans only interviewing three candidates for the position and possibly skipping Whisenhunt’s interview. Only time will tell, but the Texans have a decision to make in the coming days.
