Texans Top 20 of 2013: #16 Whitney Mercilus

In this series, we look at the top 20 Houston Texans of the 2013 season.

When you look at the defense as a whole and the outside linebacker position, only Whitney Mercilus produced anything from the position. One factor that was overlooked was how he showed flashes as a capable defender in this defense. Mercilus finished with 7 sacks (2nd on team), 9 quarterback hits (2nd on team) and 33 quarterback hurries (3rd on the team), which is what this team asked from him.

He disappeared at times but when you look at his production, when he made games count, he made a considerable impact on those games. In the games against San Diego, Baltimore, Seattle, Jacksonville and San Francisco, Mercilus showed how good he can be for a team looking for a consistent pass rush.

He also took a positive step forward as a run defender and put together some solid games in that department, but there is still work to do for the second year pro. Mercilus started 16 games for the first time in his NFL career and he showed the highs and low expected from a player still learning the game. The physical ability is there and he will be a key piece for the defense moving into next season. The third season coming up for the former 1st round draft pick will be key, and getting a new voice to coach him could be key for another step in his development.
