The Bill O’Brien Era Arrives in Houston

The scene was set with red carpet, Houston Texans cheerleaders, Toro, select VIP all fit for a king at Reliant Stadium’s West Club.

Bill O’Brien was introduced as the Houston Texans third head coach in franchise history and the events leading up to this day was met with excitement from anyone who follows the Texans.

Owner Bob McNair let it be known that O’Brien met the guidelines set forth in the coaching search and backed it with statistics to the media. McNair and General Manager Rick Smith sat next to O’Brien with their head held up high for the first time in recent months when talking about the Texans.

Words like accountability and toughness were used to describe the new era in Texans football and the way that O’Brien addressed the media he was passionate with his words. Something that has not been seen at Reliant in some time, and in this case the change could be good.

It is hard to say what will come of the O’Brien era in Houston and the new head coach was very fortunate for this previous stops at Penn State and New England, but he reiterated that he was the “Head Coach of the Houston Texans, now.”.

It was hard not to get excited with hearing O’Brien speak to the media and it was equally hard not to want the 2014 season to start tomorrow. O’Brien did mention that there was work to be done on the roster, but he sees talent. Also, the first step of his coaching tenure in Houston starts tomorrow with him interviewing every assistant on the 2013 coaching staff. The process will take care of itself but O’Brien made sure to note he wants coaches as passionate as him when it comes to putting his staff together.

With a season that ended in disappointment, the Texans organization seems to have the feel of turning around with the hiring of O’Brien, the polar opposite of what Gary Kubiak brought these past few seasons for the Texans. Only time will tell what the outcome will be, but the start of the O’Brien Era has restored hope.
