Pepper Johnson Linked to Houston?

Former New England Patriots Linebacker Coach Pepper Johnson has been rumored to be linked the new coaching staff forming in Houston. When Bill O’Brien arrived in Houston, there were reports that Johnson could possibly be the defensive coordinator, but that all was changed when Romeo Crennel was hired for that position.

Johnson has been with New England Head Coach Bill Belichick since his rookie year as a linebacker for the New York Giants in 1986 and been with him the majority of his NFL playing and coaching career. Johnson has coached under Belichick since 2000 as the assistant linebackers, inside linebacker, defensive line and linebackers coach.

He is leaving the Patriots after this season, and signs have him pointed on possibly coming to Houston, to coach once again under Romeo Crennel.

The Texans already have a defensive line coach in Bill Kollar, and linebackers coach in Mike Vrabel which leaves the question if there is any room for Johnson in Houston. The possibility could be an inside linebackers coach with Vrabel coaching the outside linebackers like he did for the Patriots in 2001-2003.

Adding Johnson would be another big plus for the Texans staff, especially since Johnson has already worked under Crennel as the inside linebackers coach and defensive line coach.

The Texans are waiting for the entire staff to be complete before announcing it officially.
