Texans Roster Evaluation: Inside Linebacker

In this series, we look at current Houston Texans who are still on the roster and under contract. We look at their potential role with the new regime and what it could mean for the 2014 season.

The Houston Texans have another position group that needs some help, and the inside linebacker are thin once again going into 2014.

Inside Linebackers

Brian Cushing

If Cushing could stay healthy it would be a big boost for the Texans defense. Two seasons have been cut in half due to severe leg injuries, and both came from low blocks. Coming back from his ACL  injury in 2012, Cushing had some issues early on in 2013 getting his mental part of his game back. There were plenty of times where it looked like Cushing was protecting his knee and playing high which slowed him on the field.

His season came to an unfortunate end against the Kansas City Chiefs on a block from Jamaal Charles which Cushing’s leg was planted in the ground. 2013 turned into a lost season for Cushing and ended up putting salt on the wound for the Texans season.

Trying to find a way to keep Cushing healthy is a big priority for the Texans and letting him find his confidence on the field. When he has played all 16 games in a season he had produced some big seasons, and has been a leader for the defense. With the new defensive coordinator in Romeo Crennel coming there could finally be some big bodies up front on the defensive line to protect the inside linebackers better.

Jeff Tarpinian

One of the best signings during the season, Tarpinian showed he can do more than just fill a roster. He spot started during the season when Joe Mays missed a game against the Oakland Raiders, and he did not disappoint with an active game.

His biggest contribution is his ability to cover bigger tight ends in space and he ended up being the nickel and dime linebacker in those sets. He is fits the mold on what NFL linebackers need to be in certain situations and keeping in him in Houston will help the team.

Knowing he has spent time with the New England Patriots before his arrival in Houston could be of even more value now for the defense.

Mike Mohamed

A roster filler during the season, Mohamed was a good special teams player for the Texans.

He produced during training camp and it looked like he had a chance to make the team coming out of camp. Mohamed will be in an upward climb to make the team in 2014.

The undrafted rookie landed on the injured reserve early in training camp with a leg injury.  A talented young linebacker who can cover in space, will have another shot to perform in training camp.
