The Houston Texans Select Lonnie Ballentine as Mr. Irrelevant

The Houston Texans have selected safety Lonnie Ballentine, safety from Memphis  as the 256th selection in the NFL Draft marking the end of the 2014 NFL Draft. Ballentine visited the Texans in a pre draft visit and became the final pick of the 2014 Texans draft class.

He played in 42 games for the Tigers and had 141 total tackles with three career interceptions.

At 6-3 and 219 lbs. the safety ran a 4.39 40 yard dash (hand timed) and had a vertical of 38 inches during his pro day. According to long time college evaluator Gil Brandt, Ballentine

“He played all four years in college, but is a very young player playing a new position at free safety.”

He is considered a long and rangy safety that has all the physical tools to be a good NFL player. Getting him to his potential will be key and should be in the mix for a special teams contributor when the season kicks off.
