Texans Mandatory Mini-Camp Day Three: Early Release

Practice was short but was probably the most important of the practice schedule with the return of a familiar face to the Houston Texans facility. The Texans wrapped up an important part of the Bill O’Brien era learning as much as they could with the new system.

Day Three

Q Returns

David Quessenberry was allowed by his doctors to return to the Texans today for a quick visit to see his teammates. Quessenberry’s white blood count was down and Bill O’Brien had an idea that they would get the visit, and he was more than excited for him to show up to practice.

“That is a special thing, a 23-year-old guy who is going through that, a very special guy, impressive guy, how he’s dealing with it, comes from a great family. Mom and dad are awesome. They’ve been here. Two brothers, one brother plays at the Naval Academy, another brother plays at UCLA. Just a great family. It was great to see him out there. I think he was able to come to practice today—the doctors let him come to practice and he was able to say a few words to the team, and I know it meant a lot to the team and I know it meant a lot to him.”

Ben Jones, the Punt Returner

Practice was ended early due to the punt return skills of offensive lineman Ben Jones. Jones was called out by Head Coach Bill O’Brien to catch a punt and if he did the team was getting their vacation early. Off the foot of Chris Boswell, it was a low and short punt that called Jones into action on a sliding catch that sent the entire team into a frenzy and a big celebration for the catch.

Injury Updates

Jadeveon Clowney is excepted to return to the Texans for training camp after his surgery on his sports hernia. O’Brien sees no reason for him not to be ready for the start of camp while Clowney wasn’t so sure he would be ready for camp but was going to do everything he can to be on the field with his teammates. Clowney is planning to stay around Houston during the down time prior to camp opening so he can continue to work.

Jeoffery Pagan, the Texans draft pick, has been working to get back to the field after a shoulder surgery prior to the draft. O’Brien is not sure when he will return or if he will be ready when training camp opens. He will work as a defensive end when he returns but they feel he can contribute at the nose tackle position when needed.

Akeem Dent Has Not Arrived Yet

The team acknowledged the deal sending T.J. Yates to Atlanta for inside linebacker Akeem Dent.

“That is what happened. T.J. Yates, we traded him for Akeem Dent. Akeem Dent is a guy that has played a lot of football in Atlanta. I think he played in like 47 games. He’s going to come in here and battle at the inside linebacker spot and also on special teams. We’re looking forward to seeing what he does in training camp.”
