Texas Longhorn’s Nose Tackle Poona Ford Meets with the Houston Texans at the Senior Bowl

After their first day of work at the Senior Bowl practice, the Houston Texans took time to speak directly with University of Texas defensive lineman Poona Ford. Ford is working this week with the Texans coaching staff, specifically defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

Ford checked in at 5’ 11-5/8” and 306 pounds, with an 80-1/4″ wingspan—which is roughly the same as that of a 6’ 8″ man. There were concerns among draft pundits regarding Ford’s height but with his arm length, those concerns could be alleviated. He is a four-year defensive lineman who appeared in 46 career games with 30 starts. In 2017, Ford had 34 total tackles with 8 tackles for loss. The stout nose tackle had 136 total tackles for his career with 20.5 tackles for loss.

The Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and the Longhorns defensive MVP put in work at the Shrine Game and is now having a strong start to the Senior Bowl.

Former Longhorn defensive back Rod Babers gave his thoughts on Ford:

Poona Ford is short and stout, with more girth than length. Shouldn’t be able to eat up the space he does. He demands a double team and is a big reason Texas was top 5 in FBS in stuff rate. Bama and Clemson thought he was too short and OU wouldn’t consider him at all. He’s one of those players who doesn’t stand out based on measurables because he’s 5’11″ but once the Shrine game scouts saw him, they loved him. Same was true of Charlie Strong’s staff and same will be true in Senior bowl practices. He’s no Casey Hampton but compact like Casey was (6’1” 330 lbs.), or a Jerry Ball who was also 6’1” 330 lbs. Poona is 5’11”, 305 lbs. His ceiling would be those guys. The more you see him the more you like him. He was Texas’ Defensive MVP this year. (Rod Babers, The HornATX)
