Houston Texans Hosting Free Agent Cornerback David Amerson

The Houston Texans are starting their work on potential fits for the team heading into 2018 by hosting free agent cornerback David Amerson on Monday. Amerson was cut by the Oakland Raiders early last week and is free to visit any team due to being an unrestricted free agent.

Amerson was released two days before his entire 2018 salary was going to be fully guaranteed. The Raiders will save over $21 million in cap space over the next three seasons.

The 5th year cornerback started 6 games for the Raiders this season and put up career lows in passes defended and tackles. His season was slowed with a foot injury that he had all season.

Amerson was claimed off waivers from the Washington Redskins in 2015 and posted career highs with 53 total tackles, 25 passes defended and 4 interceptions. That strong season earned Amerson a $38 million extension after the season.

The Texans have Amerson’s former Raiders defensive coordinator John Pagano on the staff who is now coaching outside linebackers. That could prove vital for the Texans to find a way to land the experienced cornerback.

Amerson is in his 5th season out of North Carolina State and was drafted in the 2nd round by the Redskins in the 2011 NFL Draft.
