Texans Sign Ricardo Mathews

week1pg-horizontal

The Houston Texans have signed free agent defensive end Ricardo Mathews to a deal. Mathews was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 7th round (238th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Cincinnati. The 6-3 300lbs. defensive lineman has spent the past four seasons with the Colts and has totaled 51 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. He has appeared in 52 games and started 6 of them in that four year period. Adding Mathews gives the Texans some more defensive line help and more than likely another piece at the defensive end. Mathews at the moment looks like a depth…

SOTT Scouting: Kendrick Lewis

A depth signing by the Houston Texans, safety Kendrick Lewis has plenty to prove to make the 53 man roster coming out of training camp. Lewis was a nice surprise for the Chiefs as a 5th round pick out of Mississippi and was supposed to be a dynamic duo with Eric Berry.  His best season was his rookie season and heading into his 4th year his play slipped after Romeo Crennel was fired by the Chiefs. He had shoulder surgery after the 2011 season, and injured the shoulder in the 2012 preseason that caused him to miss 7 games. Lewis never returned to his form…

SOTT Scouting: Nose Tackle, Jerrell Powe

The Houston Texans added their first player to show their hand on what they are looking for their new look defense in defensive tackle Jerrell Powe. We watched Powe in action from the 2012 and the 2013 season, and there is very little game time for the three-year veteran. Powe is looking to get his career going once again especially with high expectations coming out of Ole Miss. Buried in the depth chart in Kansas City his time was even more limited in the 2013 season. In our film study of Powe over the last two seasons, it was a mixed bag…

Texans Free Agency: Weight Gain (Day 8)

Jerrell+Powe+Kansas+City+Chiefs+v+Green+Bay+VIOwpWDxquHl

The Houston Texans have finally made a slight noise in free agency with the signing of one of Romeo Crennel’s players from Kansas City. The signing is an interesting one especially when it shows the Texans are trying to add bigger players to the defensive line for Crennel’s two gap scheme.   – The Texans made a little movement today when they signed free agent defensive lineman Jerrell Powe.  Powe was drafted by Romeo Crennel in 2011 and he measures in at 6-2 and 331 lbs. Moving to my new home with the @HoustonTexans … Can’t wait to get to work!…

Texans Free Agency: Plenty of Value Left

The free agency period did not start the way Houston Texans onlookers expected and now the wait period for the organization to produce some signings is taking longer than expected. The Texans were not going to be big players in the first wave of the free agency period and the early contracts passed out by NFL teams proved that. Now the second and third tier free agents are slowly getting signed and this could mark where the Texans could be waiting to make their moves. With $12 million plus available in cap space the Texans could still find great value…

Texans Bring Back Garrett Graham

Graham

The Houston Texans have re-signed free agent tight end Garrett Graham to a three year deal to keep one of their own in Houston. Graham was set to test the free agency market, but the Head Coach Bill O’Brien saw him as a keeper for the 2014 roster. Graham came into the spotlight in 2013 when starting tight end Owen Daniels want down for the season with a leg injury. Graham responded with his best season as a pro with 49 receptions for 545 yards and five touchdowns. He started 11 of the 13 games he appeared in and missed the final three with a…

Braman, McClain and Jean Non-Tendered By the Texans

Bryan Braman

Texans didn’t make qualifying offers to RFAs OLB Bryan Braman, DE Terrell McClain and WR Lestar Jean. They’re now free agents. — John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) March 12, 2014 The Houston Texans have not tendered restricted free agents Bryan Braman, Terrell McClain and Lestar Jean making them unrestricted free agents. This opens the door for all three of them to look for other teams in 2014 and ends their tenure with the Texans. Braman played outside linebacker for the Texans and was considered a special teams ace for the team. His play declined the past few seasons and never really contributed…

Report: Earl Mitchell Will Have a New Team in 2014

Mitchell

According to ESPN’s Tania Ganguli, Houston Texans defensive end and soon to be free agent defensive tackle Earl Mitchell will be headed to a new team in 2014. Mitchell was drafted by the Texans in 2010 in the 3rd round (81st overall) out of Arizona. The Houston native and North Shore alum returned to his home city to appear in 63 game for the Texans in four seasons. He totaled 134 total tackles playing in two different defensive schemes while in Houston. He lined up as a three technique in the 4-3 defense  and a nose tackle in the 3-4…
