Digging Deep: New Orleans Edition

Digging-Deep-(1)

The Texans lost 34-27 to the Saints on Saturday night to move to 2-1 on the season. The starters saw their longest action of the preseason, playing throughout the first half before the reserves entered a very physical game. Going inside the box score reveals the positives that they need to carry into the regular season, as well as the negatives that caused them to lose their first game of the preseason.   Positives: 83% Matt Schaub improved on his numbers from last week against the 49ers completing 15 of 18 passes (83% completion) for 194 yards and a TD…

Derek Newton Named Starter

DerekNewton

It was confirmed today by Head Coach Gary Kubiak that second year right tackle Derek Newton will be the starter heading into the 2012 Houston Texans campaign. Despite a camp battle with veteran Rashad Butler, it felt like Butler’s poor play is what gave way to name Newton the week one starter. Newton did show some bright spots and some potential of being a good NFL football player, but playing the game is what is going to help Newton more than anything. We actually had a chance to talk to Newton during training camp before the first preseason game and you can see…

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Saints Edition

KareemJackson2

The Texans went to New Orleans to take on the Saints in another showdown between two high-powered offenses. The Texans came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter. Matt Schaub was red-hot and hitting various different receivers and mixing in the run. The Texans came out of the gate fast and from the looks of things it looked like they had a chip on their shoulder from last year’s close loss. The Texans and Saints battled it out, but the end result was still the same, the Saints had too much offense for the Texans’ second teams to…

Texans 53 Man Roster | Version 2

GrayKubiak

This is a good time to see if we can put together a legitimate 53 man roster for the Texans in our second prediction of the preseason. We released our first prediction at the beginning of last week, now we give it another crack. Take a look at our second prediction of the 53 man roster   Offense (24)   Quarterbacks (3) Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates, John Beck Notes: Only change is the addition of John Beck, Kubiak says there are decisions to be made so we helped him with it. Keep both quarterbacks and let Case Keenum develop on the…

Texans First Cuts Announced

Omar-Gaither

The Houston Texans have released their first cuts of the preseason and getting to the league mandated 75 by Monday. The biggest surprises with the current list is Brett Hartmann, Derrell Smith and Nick Mondek. Nick Mondek was drafted in the 6th round in the 2012 NFL draft and was considered a project coming into the season.  He never really impressed at any level to get to the second round of cuts. Derrell Smith, who was making a position change from linebacker to fullback, never got going with the offense. Below are the first major moves of the preseason.   First Cuts of the Preseason (12)   Omar…

The Rundown: Texans vs. Saints

Glover-Qiun

The final preseason appearance for the majority of the Houston Texans starters saw the New Orleans Saints defeat the hometown team 34-27. The first half of football was action packed with plenty of offense and turnovers in which the turnovers actually proved to be the biggest disappointment for the Texans on Saturday night. The Texans stayed in their base defense the majority of the night and let the one on one match ups develop and give some real assessment of players. Offensively in the first half, the Texans were clicking on all cylinders and were very precise with their plays and use of the time clock. The up tempo pace of…

Randy Bullock Lands on Injured Reserve

RandyBullock2

Head Coach Gary Kubiak gave a bit of bad news pertaining to rookie kicker Randy Bullock, when he informed the media Sunday afternoon that Bullock would be placed on injured reserve. Bullock’s season will come to an end before it ever started and the starting kicking job might go to Shayne Graham, barring any moves within the week. An injured groin, described as “black and blue” by Kubiak, is what sent Bullock for tests this morning. According to reports, Bullock has been battling this injury since camp started and kicking through the pain. Bullock did the majority of the kicking last night and was 3 of…

Texans: Back Burner Issues

RandyBullock

Houston Texans’ fans were concerned with two big situations when first coming into camp, the wide receiver situation and the right side of the offensive line. Now heading past the halfway point of the preseason, the recent play of young wide receivers Keshawn Martin and Lestar Jean has calmed the wide receiver worries a bit. As for the right side of the offensive line, it looks like Antoine Caldwell has the right guard position under control while the right tackle position is still being sorted out between Derek Newton and Rashad Butler. If you have been keeping up with the Texans, you have been paying attention to those story lines and know what is…

Texans Players to Watch: New Orleans Edition

WhitneyMercilus1

The final real tune up for the Houston Texans’ starters will be this coming Saturday night, and they will encounter a good test with the New Orleans Saints. The accurate arm of Drew Brees will be a good test for the Texans’ secondary, who were torched in the 2011 regular season by the Saints’ passing attack. A new season and new issues, the Texans have some kinks to work out on both offense and defense before decisions are made on personnel when the Miami Dolphins come to Reliant in week one. Despite a good showing against the San Francisco 49ers, there were a…

Sunny Harris Lost for the Year

"Sonny Harris #91

According to Head Coach Gary Kubiak, nose tackle Ra’Shon “Sunny” Harris was lost today for the season with a torn tricep injury. Harris will probably end up on the injured reserve, but that move is yet to happen. Harris was having a good camp but was slowed at the beginning with an upper leg injury that held him out the first preseason game. He appeared in the second preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers and played plenty of snaps and registered 3 total tackles (1 solo and 2 assists). With Harris out for the season, the Texans have two healthy nose…
