Quick Look: Texans 2013 Free Agents

Glover Quina nd Brice McCain

It’s that time of year to close the books on the 2012 season and start looking at the 2013 Houston Texans and the first order of business is their own free agents. With 21 potential free agents on the horizon, there are no real Big Money players but there are one or two current players, in our estimation, that are a necessity to keep in Houston. We take a quick look at the free agents on the current roster and give our quick looks at each one.   Free agency begins on March 12, the first day of the new League Year….

Five Texans Already Ruled Out For Sunday

Brandon Harris

The Houston Texans have already ruled out Brooks Reed (Groin), Derek Newton (Knee), Johnathan Joseph (Hamstring and Groin), Antoine Caldwell (Hamstring) and Bradie James (Hamstring) for the Sunday game against the Tennessee Titans. Also, Alan Ball will be a game time decision with a foot injury which could lead to moving Brice McCain into the starting lineup with second year corner back Brandon Harris getting more defensive snaps at the nickel corner position.   The majority of the back ups played plenty of snaps against the Detroit Lions in their Thanksgiving game but this could be good for the Texans…

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Lions Edition

Manning

This Thanksgiving brought us another high scoring thriller between the Houston Texans and the Detroit Lions. The game which going in many thought would be tough, lived up to its billing.  The Texans came into this game shorthanded on the defensive side of the ball with starters Shaun Cody and Johnathan Joseph out. The Texans had just come out of a brawl with the Jacksonville Jaguars (divisional rival) to go into another on a short week. The Texans showed their mettle to overcome injuries, lack of execution on offense, inconsistency on defense, and special team shortcomings to pull out a great…

The Rundown: Texans vs. Lions

Forsett

Possibly one of the oddest games we can remember from the Houston Texans history of games, but how amazing is it to see them sitting at 10-1? After a grueling stretch of three games and a short week to play in their first Thanksgiving game, they pulled out another overtime victory over the Detroit Lions. After what could be called a game of some odd plays and situations, the Texans finally caught some big breaks that resulted in a win. Sometimes luck is involved in winning, but good teams find a way to win and that is exactly what the Texans…

The Rundown: Texans vs. Bears

Kareem

Talk about a heavyweight bout, the Houston Texans went into Soldier Field and came out with a huge 13-6 win against the Chicago Bears. In a rainy setting on a sloppy field, the Texans were able to put together enough offense, play stout defense and put together enough special teams coverage to come out with a huge win.   The Rundown   – Don’t look now but Kareem Jackson is turning into a special player for the Texans. His coverage skills were impressive when he was running stride for stride with Devin Hester, and showed some good ball skills with…

Mid Season Report Card: Linebackers

IMG_1831

This is another installment of our SOTT Mid Season Report card and we will run through every position group for the Houston Texans. We focus on the linebackers in this post and give our thoughts on the position group.   The Linebacker Grades Brian Cushing: His season was cut way too short for our liking, but his speed in the middle of the field is unmatched. Throw in his leadership on the field, Cushing had risen to the forefront of the defense. He was a tackling machine and a three down linebacker this season and was actually playing at a high level. Throw…

The Rundown: Texans vs. Bills

OwenDaniels

After shaking off the bye week blues, the Houston Texans got their game rolling in the second half of the game against the Buffalo Bills. The Texans closed out the Bills 21-9 and improved to 7-1 overall but more importantly 7-0 in the AFC. Under Head Coach Gary Kubiak, the Texans had a record of 2-4 coming out of the bye week and early in the game it looked like the Texans were treading on the brink of disaster. The danger was avoided and the Texans looked a little more like themselves in the second half, and made life difficult for…

Texans Players To Watch: Bills Edition

BradieJames

The Buffalo Bills battle the Houston Texans this Sunday at Reliant Stadium in what will be the first homecoming for former Texans’ first round pick Mario Williams.  The 6-1 Texans are coming off a big win versus AFC rival Baltimore Ravens while the 3-4 Bills are looking to rebound after a 35-34 loss to the Titans.  Both teams are coming off bye weeks and should be well rested.  However, Mario Williams had surgery on his wrist during his time off but vows to play this Sunday.  So far, Williams has 3.5 sacks and 16 tackles on a defense that is…

Calculated Free Agents Have Helped the Texans

ShaunCody

Teams are not built over night but being able to add the right pieces to an NFL team can make the difference in having a team with real depth. General Manager Rick Smith took some tough criticism with his moves running this organization but he has learned on the run and got this franchise going in the right direction. It takes the draft to build for the future, but it takes looking at the free agent pool to sign solid NFL talent. It is impressive looking at what Smith has been able to do with the free agents he has signed that are…

3 Questions About the Texans

BradeWade

It is hard to imagine from a casual look that anything could be an issue with the Houston Texans, who are sitting at 6-1 and atop the AFC Conference and the AFC South. Watching the Texans, it is easy to see the team is still searching for that perfect game where they can be left satisfied.  Despite 6 wins, there is room for improvement. Like all NFL teams, the Texans have some issues that need to be corrected to calm some wondering minds. With a few injuries and issues on the team, we look at three questions that have come to the…
