Texans First Cuts Announced
The Houston Texans have released their first cuts of the preseason and getting to the league mandated 75 by Monday. The biggest surprises with the current list is Brett Hartmann, Derrell Smith and Nick Mondek. Nick Mondek was drafted in the 6th round in the 2012 NFL draft and was considered a project coming into the season. He never really impressed at any level to get to the second round of cuts. Derrell Smith, who was making a position change from linebacker to fullback, never got going with the offense. Below are the first major moves of the preseason. First Cuts of the Preseason (12) Omar…
Training Camp: On the Mend
Entering Day Seven of Houston Texans training camp, the big story in camp was the recent injury to J.J. Watt and the excused absence of wide receiver Lestar Jean. Here are some camp notes from today. – There were plenty of rumors flying around on the absence of Lestar Jean from Thursday’s practice, but on Friday he was the first one on the field and was working with assistants on the jugs machine. Jean looked like a totally different player, almost rejuvenated from the previous days. He caught plenty of passes and caught a deep bomb from the arm of T.J. Yates on a play…
Texans Training Camp: The Opening Act
Today was the opening day of Texans 2012 Training Camp, and there was a buzz in the air. So much 5,012 fans showed up as early as 2 a.m. before the gates opened at 7 a.m. Plenty of notes on today’s camp. Camp Notes – The first hour of practice was outside, but was soon moved inside. The reason was that they wanted the team to get “acclimated” to the heat. – Offensive lineman Kasey Studdard was signed to take the place of Thomas Austin because of a hamstring injury. Austin was on the bike majority of practice. Also punter Brett…
Texans that are on the Fringe
With training camp closing in, the Houston Texans will be faced with some tough decisions with their roster heading into week 1. I know this may be premature talk but the reality has to set in, NFL teams are always looking for the younger and cheaper options for their teams. Last season, the Texans were able to have rookies, both drafted and undrafted, make an impact on the season and fill in when necessary. Throw in some key in-season signings, the Texans were able to weather the storm when it came to injuries. This season the Texans have already lost 19 players from their 2011 team,…
Texans OTAs, The Red Herring Edition
Here are some quick tidbits from Houston Texans OTAs. – It looks like UDFA, Hebron Fangupo will not be lost for the season, and looks to be sidelined until late next week. He was rolled up on during practice and ended up with a sprained MCL. – Line Backers coach Reggie Herring had some choice words about the loss of DeMeco Ryans and the addition of Bradie James. “I don’t mind throwing it on the table, we’re pretty pleased with picking Bradie (James) up, because we feel like we gained back what we lost with DeMeco leaving, and…
Texans Profiles: The UDFA
Very impressed with the Houston Texans draft class, the team did not stop after the draft getting some more work done. The Texans front office has put together what appears to be one of the more impressive undrafted rookie free agent groups we have seen in some time. The class is headlined with three players who in our estimation have real shots at making the Texans roster, and the reason why these three did not get drafted is still puzzling. Even still, this 2012 draft crop of rookies has the chance to be one of the deepest in Texans’ history. The Texans…
Hartmann Suspended by NFL
Houston Texans’ rookie punter Brett Hartman was handed down a 4 game suspension by the NFL late Friday afternoon. It appears he has violated the league’s substance abuse policy, but the exact substance is still up in the air. Houston Fox Sports, Mark Berman, was the first to report the news via twitter.
Contract Talk: Neil Rackers
In this series we are going to look at the potential free agents of the Houston Texans, and figure out if they work into the plans for the coming years…. Considered a savior of some short Neil Rackers was signed to replace the much maligned Kris Brown in 2010 to help shore up an embarrassing kicking game. He actually had a kicking “competition” when he arrived in 2010 with Brown, but the writing was on the wall with Rackers coming in.
Brett Hartmann Lost for the Year
The Houston Texans on Monday afternoon announced that rookie punter Brett Hartmann would miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Hartmann suffered the injury at the end of the fourth quarter on a non contact play in the middle of the field.
Texans Find Success Outside the Draft
The Houston Texans have seem to find some key contributors to the 2011 Texans roster that were not drafted in their respective draft. It is amazing to see what the Texans front office has done to fill their roster and especially the undrafted free agents that are making some impact in this 2011 season. Many draft classes are looked at who makes the team that is picked between rounds 1 thorough 7, but you have to account who makes the team as an invite during camp. The Texans undrafted players are an impressive group, and shows the draft does not have…
