Inside the Box Score: Carolina Edition

Keshawnmartin3

While watching the game on Saturday and reviewing the box score and play by play on NFL.com, I noticed some positive and negative numbers for the Texans.   Positive: While the Texans’ longest run was only 15 yards, it was good to see them make a few big pass plays. They had 4 pass plays go for over 20 yards, and only one of these plays was made by a significant piece from the offense last year (Owen Daniels). Lestar Jean, Keshawn Martin, and Garrett Graham had the other 3 big plays. Hopefully they can keep that up in the…

The POGs: Carolina Edition

BenTate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In the first pre-season game of the Texans’ 2012 football season, they overwhelmed a Carolina Panthers team that have high hopes heading into this year. Although there were mistakes made by the Texans, it was a strong performance by the reigning AFC South Champs. Pre-season games are typically used to get your starters in a rhythm but more importantly a way to gauge your rookies and second team players. The Texans’ defense seemingly picked up where they left off last year. It is hard to imagine this group being another top 5 defense, simply because it is…

Shaun Cody Out with Back Issue

Shaun-Cody

Today Head Coach Gary Kubiak said that starting nose tackle Shaun Cody has a back injury, a result of a disc issue from Saturday’s game against Carolina. Cody received an epidural for pain and will be reevaluated in the coming days to determine how long he will be out. Cody has been fighting back issues during camp and has been given practice time off to get him ready for the season. Cody has provided some stout run defense from the nose position where he helped the defense get to the number two overall unit in the NFL. With 23 tackles and…

The Rundown: Texans vs. Carolina

Tim-Dobbins

The first preseason game is in the books and the Houston Texans looked good on their opening game of the 2012 preseason. Despite some turnovers and red zone issues that should work themselves out, the Texans beat the Carolina Panthers 26-13. It was a good start for the Texans even though the starters were limited and the reserves saw the majority of the playing time starting in the second quarter.   Here are a few thoughts from the Preseason Opener.   - Tim Dobbins (pictured above) was all over the field against the Panthers and played like the seasoned veteran he is. He was…

Texans, Preseason Team Comparisons

Helmet

I have always been of the impression that each year when teams are matched up in the preseason that they are playing them based on teams they will face in the regular season. I know that they don’t have complete control over who they will play in the preseason, but I tend to believe that they somewhat mirror teams they will play in the regular season. Here I will comment on the preseason teams, and compare them to a team with the closest makeup that the Texans will face in the regular season. Carolina Panthers Star Players: Cam Newton, Steve…

SOTT Talks to Connor Barwin

Barwin after a hot day at camp, caught some footballs off the jugs machine before he took time out for us. We talked to Barwin about his transition as a player from his rookie season to this year, if he was the new leader of the linebackers, and his relationship with Antonio Smith and Shaun Cody.   You can follow Patrick on Twitter.  He is the Editor of State of the Texans and is a draft analyst on Sideline Scouting. Texans sign Omar Gaither

Omar-Gaither

A day after reserve inside linebacker Keyaron Fox injured his knee in practice which landed him on the injured reserve, today the Houston Texans have agreed to terms with veteran linebacker Omar Gaither. The 6 year veteran spent 5 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and the 2011 season with the Carolina Panthers, where he started 4 games. Having started 77 games in his career, the 28 year old is on the right side of age when it comes to football. He will provide another veteran presence in a thin linebacker position, with only Tim Dobbins, Bradie James and Mister Alexander as the only healthy players for…
