Quintin Demps Resigns with Texans

Quintin Demps

On Thursday, the Houston Texans announced the resigning of free agent safety Quintin Demps to a contract.  The terms of the contract were not released. Demps provided some stability to the Texans’ defense in 2011 after starter Danieal Manning went down with a leg injury that sidelined him. Demps was released after training camp but was resigned in week 8 and made an immediate impact.  He had 22 tackles, 2 interceptions and 4 pass deflections in 9 games last season. Demps also adds value in the return game where he had 5 returns for 33.8 yard average. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said this of Demps after releasing him after camp, “We…

Nothing New: An Interview with Lestar Jean

LestarJeanFAU

…honestly my whole career I been overlooked so it wasn’t nothing new for me. -Lestar Jean, Houston Texans, Wide Receiver #18   At the start of the Houston Texans 2011 training camp, the team brought in a young group of undrafted wide receivers to compete for the active roster. As camp progressed, there was one that was consistently making plays and turning heads of coaches and veterans on the field. That wide receiver was Lestar Jean, an undrafted free agent from Florida Atlantic, and with the nickname of “Big Play” he made his presence felt as a rookie in camp. At 6’3″…

Nike Doesn’t Mess Up a Good Thing

Texans Model

The Claire Bear is at it again.   NEW UNI DAY IS COMING!!! The anticipation was great, the build-up greater, the unveiling? Sort of snooze worthy. Seattle looks like it belongs in the PAC-12, just now with uniforms that will fit right in. The more “traditional” teams i.e., Chicago, Green Bay, Dallas, appear virtually unchanged. Overall, there aren’t a whole lot of differences other than fit. The new Nike pants look somehow tighter along with the Nike jerseys, which look more like UnderArmor (from www.nikeinc.com: Uniform Features Highly Innovative, Lightweight Uniform System,) as opposed to the typical loose polyester blend…

Don’t Love the Player, Love the Game

Reliant vs. the Colts

This is the first installment of The Claire Bear who will be a contributor here on State of the Texans.   The NFL guesstimates that of the 313+ million people living in America, 90 million of them are “avid female football fans.” That’s 44% of the total fan base. What is it about the NFL that creates so many “avid” fans of U.S. women? We can point to the adorably bedazzled fitted jerseys and other crap (hottest female fans in the NFL, anyone?) that fill 10 pages of a Google search for “Women & NFL.” Potentially, it could be the…

Next Man Up: Derek Newton

Derek-Newton

With the Houston Texans making some tough decisions, the NFL waits for nobody and the Texans are adjusting on the fly. After a magical 2011 season which brought the franchise’s first division title, playoff appearance and win, the Texans appeared ready for a big 2012 season with a deep roster. With the cap issues that hit the Texans, a once deep roster has to fill the voids left by players who left for other teams via free agency.   One player that might be lost in all of this offensive line shuffle may be 2010 rookie Derek Newton, who was…

Next Man Up: Rashad Butler

With the Houston Texans making some tough decisions, the NFL waits for nobody and the Texans are adjusting on the fly. After a magical 2011 season which brought the franchise’s first division title, playoff appearance and win, the Texans appeared ready for a big 2012 season with a deep roster. With the cap issues that hit the Texans, a once deep roster has to fill the voids left by players who left for other teams via free agency.   After Eric Winston was cut loose for cap purposes, the spotlight quickly turned to the 6’4″ 317 lb. swing tackle Rashad Butler to…

SOTT Analysis: DT vs. NT

Toro

This is our first article from our newest blogger, D. Roque, who will be a contributing here on State of the Texans.     Nose Tackle vs Defensive Tackle   Do the Houston Texans need a big nose tackle to continue to have success in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 system? This question sparks an ongoing debate between the Houston Texans coaching staff and the Texans fans. We as Texans fans have been salivating at the mouth for a big mammoth nose tackle such as a Vince Wilfork of the New England Patriots or a Terrance Cody of the Baltimore Ravens. Nose tackles…

Kevin Walter Takes Pay Cut

Kevin Walter

According to multiple sources, Houston Texans wide receiver Kevin Walter took a pay cut to remain with the Texans for the 2012 season. Walter was set to make $3.5 million in base salary with a $4.5 million salary cap number, but has agreed to reduce his salary to $2 million for the upcoming season with his remaining two years of his contract staying the same for the 2013-2014 seasons.
