The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Colts Edition

JJWatt2

The first divisional matchup between the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts had divisional as well as playoff implications, making it a big game. With a win, the Texans would clinch the division, while the Colts would clinch a playoff spot. Both teams needed a win to keep their positioning in the playoff race as well as the division; however, the Texans flexed their muscle just enough to close the door on the Colts.   FINAL SCORE: Texans 29 Colts 17   TEXANS REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 12-2 TEXANS DIVISIONAL RECORD: 5-0 TEXANS AFC CONFERENCE RECORD: 10-1 TEXANS VS NFC CONFERENCE RECORD:…

Mid Season Report Card: Special Teams

IMG_1831

This is the section of our SOTT Mid Season Report card and we will run through every position group for the Houston Texans. We focus on the special teams in this post and give our thoughts on the position group.   The Special Teams Shayne Graham: We have been very impressed with his field goal accuracy, which is why he is one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history. The only issue is his leg strength on long field goals and especially kickoffs. Currently, he is 13-15 in field goals (51 is the long) and in 48 kickoffs he only has 11…

Texans Name Three New Captains

Keo

Today the Houston Texans announced three new captains to the team. J.J. Watt, Chris Myers and Shiloh Keo were all named as new captains for the Texans at the halfway point of the season. J.J. Watt has been a terror to opposing offenses and has been a superstar in the making, and now Watt has been rewarded by his teammates for what he has brought to the field for the last eight games. Watt this season has 39 total tackles (31 solo), 10.5 sacks and 10 pass deflections at just the halfway point of this season. Starting center Chris Myers has…

The Rundown: Texans vs. Vikings

Reliant at Practice

Here are a few notes from tonights game against the Minnesota Vikings:   – D.J. Bryant  has stated a case to make the Texans as a practice squad player. He was active in pass rush and in run game defense. He has shown flashes of his pass rush capability throughout the season. – DeVier Posey was better late than never with his first catch of his NFL career. He caught the ball, took a hit and showed his speed for an 80 yard touchdown. He showed some big play capability which is exactly why the Texans drafted him. – Quarterback…

The Bubble Situation

JesseNading

The clock is ticking on the final 53 man roster for the Houston Texans which is due August 31st across the NFL, with the practice squad the following day. With the first cuts announced and with no real big surprises with the initial releases, the ugly part of NFL life is coming up. There will be 22 players in the unemployment line heading into the weekend, with a possibility of 8 of those players being signed to the practice squad. There is always a surprise cut to be announced and other players to be scouted for the active or practice squads from those released from other NFL teams. With…

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: 49ers Edition

Cushing

The Houston Texans opened their preseason home debut against the San Francisco 49ers which was considered a good barometer to see where they are in terms of progress this year. The 49ers are a big physical team with the same offensive philosophy as the Texans as a run heavy team, and a team that runs a stout 3-4 defense ranking ahead of the Texans against the run. This was one of the stingiest defenses in the red zone and they proved that Saturday. The Texans went into the game ready for a scrap and came out of the battle on the gridiron with…

The Rundown: Texans vs. 49ers

LestarJean

The second preseason game is in the books and the Houston Texans came out with a win over the San Francisco 49ers, 20-9. As always, there was plenty news and notes from the game and some players making some noise to stay with the Texans into week 1. Game two of the preseason has helped separate some players from others and let fans get a better idea on how the coaches and front office might be thinking with personnel. After a slow start offensively, Head Coach Gary Kubiak left the offensive starters the entire first half to get them some rhythm, which they responded…

Texans Training Camp: The Opening Act

DSC_8877

Today was the opening day of Texans 2012 Training Camp, and there was a buzz in the air. So much 5,012 fans showed up as early as 2 a.m. before the gates opened at 7 a.m. Plenty of notes on today’s camp.     Camp Notes   – The first hour of practice was outside, but was soon moved inside. The reason was that they wanted the team to get “acclimated” to the heat. –  Offensive lineman Kasey Studdard was signed to take the place of Thomas Austin because of a hamstring injury. Austin was on the bike majority of practice. Also punter Brett…

Texans that are on the Fringe

Sherrick McManis

With training camp closing in, the Houston Texans will be faced with some tough decisions with their roster heading into week 1. I know this may be premature talk but the reality has to set in, NFL teams are always looking for the younger and cheaper options for their teams. Last season, the Texans were able to have rookies, both drafted and undrafted, make an impact on the season and fill in when necessary. Throw in some key in-season signings, the Texans were able to weather the storm when it came to injuries. This season the Texans have already lost 19 players from their 2011 team,…
